MIEDO Y ASCO EN EL KIOSKO / FEAR AND LOATHING IN THE NEWSAGENTS

Today I spent most of the day in Madrid, queuing and travelling in public transport, and unfortunately I had finished my book, so I went to the newsagents for a couple of magazines. I will not say the name of the fashion magazine I bought, but I will say that I only bought it because I liked the nail varnish that came with it. Well, I just read half of the magazine and I was indignant. First of all, the fashion photoshoots consisted of clothing costing more than 100 the garment. There were a few of over a thousand, and some of those that you have to ask the price. It was unreal, offensive in times of crisis and you can’t identify with them, they only make you feel bad.

But the worst was when I reached the section about having bikini issues. The girls that were speaking of theirs, an actress with a size 6 and ... A MODEL!! And as an example they spoke of Irina Shayk! That she feels she has small breasts! That was when I repressed with difficulty the urge to throw the magazine under a bus; I calmed down and decided it was time to read something intelligent, so I took out El Jueves.

*(For the record, I don't think  thin women are unreal, or don't have body issues, I just think they should have used all kinds of body types)

But lets continue with the subject of fashion magazines. I wish there were someone who had the means to make a magazine for women who are bigger than a 16 but think 16 is enough spend on a dress. Women who prefer to know where the nicest bargains are than to see a dress that they could never afford even if it did fit, women who want to know about cheap and interesting holidays, and not where Coppola summers... well, women like us. And I don’t mean blogs; it seems that all decent bloggers who talk about these things forget as soon as they get a contract with ELLE, Vogue, etc... I speak of paper, a magazine for all of us. I'm sure there would be lots of people who would chip in, what do you think?

SOLA EN MI CABEZA / ALONE IN MY HEAD

We're in March. My birthday is coming! It was Carnival recently, and I finally got to dress up as someone that I wanted to for a long time, Jem (from the cartoons Jem and the Holograms) and the Gentle Giant dressed up as a Colonial Marine from Aliens (I made the facehugger) let’s see what you think...

I don’t write much lately because I basically don’t have much to tell. I spend almost all day at home bored searching for jobs. I try not to complain too much or get too depressed, especially considering how the country is going, but this is the longest streak I've had without a job, and I am getting a tad paranoid. I see every day offer after offer for Secretaries with native English and experience. And there must be plenty in Madrid, because they reject me every time. And for things shop sales person they’re asking for experience, basically because they can, so many people are looking for work that they can afford to ask for whatever they want, and offer very little. And not a day goes by that government does say something about the unemployed like we to do it for pleasure. Or saying we should do something (like social work) in exchange for the benefit payment. Sorry, but paying you a big chunk of my paycheck every month for 10 years is not enough? OK, so just give it back and I won’t ask for anything more, I assure you.

Basically, I'm frustrated. But a couple of things are coming up that I hope will cheer me up a little. As I said this month is my birthday, I am turning 34, and I'm so happy with it. And in May, if everything goes well, will be the 2nd Pin Up Party at La Campana, and I have thought up my look, so I have a few distractions.

2012

Well, it’s a New Year. I know I’m a bit late the first post of the year, but I've been a bit lazy.

For New Year's Eve I went to dinner with the Sister, who made lamb chops that were to die for. As you can see, we were having a lot of fun...

Especially poor Niña, who was not only was scared shitless by the fireworks, but also had two idiots putting hats on her.

I, as usual, was divine. My bouffant was so huge that not only did I bump it every time I bent over, but I had to perch my party hat like I was a Conehead. I made my own dress, and I was really happy with the outcome.

After dinner, the Sister went to dance with her friends, and I went to La Campana, to celebrate the new year with Nush, Nano, and my handsome Gentle Giant, among many others (do not tell anyone, but before leaving, what I really wanted to do was curl up on the couch and fall asleep watching a movie, I’m getting old). And I used my new camera, courtesy of the Giant, for the first time in public. It was a fun night, and we came home very late and very tired.

The New Year has begun with few changes. I'm still looking for work and getting very few offers, so I’m stressed out and have no money. The only new thing has been getting a speech therapist (4 years after my surgery), but for now I won’t be able to go, because it’s in a different town and I can’t afford the train two days a week. Interestingly there seems to be no speech therapists in my village.

Also, it was Tinkerbell's birthday, and although we arrived super late, we had a great time, and next week, two more birthdays. Ugh, too much partying for an old woman like me!
